Conventional TBI treatment often focuses on managing individual symptoms rather than addressing the underlying biology. This is Neurologic Nutrition, a Functional Medicine approach designed to support the five key areas involved in brain health.

Why Symptom Management Alone Often Falls Short

    • Many standard treatments are built to manage specific symptoms, like seizures, as they arise. That approach plays an important role, but it doesn't address the underlying biologic terrain.
    • Physical, occupational, and speech therapy are designed to support neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to form new neural pathways. This process works best when paired with support for the brain's underlying biology.

Emerging research suggests the immune system may play a role in how the brain responds after a TBI, alongside the five core dysfunctions this approach is designed to help support: chronic neuroinflammation, blood-brain barrier disruption, gut-brain axis dysfunction, microvascular impairment, and impaired neuroregeneration.

For 30 years I have educated physicians in over 23 countries in Functional Medicine. For 17 years I served as lead educator for the company behind The Institute of Functional Medicine outside the U.S. In 2014 I fractured my skull in 3 places. After working with Functional Medicine, I made significant progress in my recovery, which brought me back to walking and out of a wheelchair. Over the past years, I have divided my time between educating practitioners and physicians in Functional Neurology and managing sales forces for Functional Medicine companies. I also hold a life/health coach certification from The Institute of Integrative Nutrition, adding a psychological component to my practice. In 2024 I opened My Brain Mechanic to help provide combined psychological and physical support for TBI recovery.

    2. Supporting mitochondrial function and the health of membranes, synapses, and axons
    3. Supporting healthy immune system regulation in areas of the brain

Neuroplasticity is supported through 6 educational modules, and each patient receives an individualized plan. Programs are structured to run in phases based on individual progress.

Advanced Services in My Brain Mechanic

    Precision Diagnostics

This approach is designed to support the whole brain and gastrointestinal system, rather than targeting a single area. A patient's symptoms help inform which regions, whether frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal, cerebellum, or brain stem, may benefit from additional nutritional support. The goal is dietary and nutritional support that helps promote a healthy brain and gut-brain axis.

    Innovative Treatments

We offer an educational program for individuals affected by Traumatic Brain Injury that includes a 5-step process, neuroplasticity education, and life/health coaching. Our goal is to support the best possible outcomes for those we work with.

    Multidisciplinary Approach

We take a multidisciplinary approach to patient support, informed by over a decade of research.

    Personalized Care

I provide personalized attention to everyone I work with, taking the time to understand individual needs and concerns. I will work with you to develop a plan tailored to your specific situation.

    Cutting-Edge Research

I am committed to advancing the field of neurology through ongoing research. I stay actively engaged with studies aimed at improving education and outcomes for those I work with.

    Compassion

In my 30 years in Functional Medicine, I primarily educated physicians and practitioners. I was always struck by how much compassion for patients was missing from that work. Dealing with a neurological condition can be incredibly difficult, and as a TBI survivor myself, I can connect with what you're going through because I've lived it. This is why I'm so passionate about this work, because I never want anyone to go through what I did without understanding or support.

OK! First, it has been a joy to work with you. As I have mentioned before I believe God had everything to do with our paths crossing and it's been a pure pleasure for me. Secondly, the worst of my symptoms that I have dealt with for the past 10 years is mostly gone.  The feeling in my head of being disconnected and swimmy has improved by at least 80% and that is a miracle I have been relentlessly searching for. I have more energy and can function with a little less sleep some days. I can work longer hours before noticing symptoms and without feeling completely out of it and woozy.

    Tasha L

The 2 major symptoms I have battled with since my accident have been my memory and speech. Both have vastly improved. People can now understand me when I am talking. Scott, you have changed my life.

    Bob H

I really did not believe you could do anything and after 2 months I was extremely frustrated.  Then everything started to change and my memory, my balance, and that brain fog went away.  Not 100% but the most improvement I have had without question and I have been to multiple neurologists and therapists. I am at 4 months and still improving.
